Overview
Established semiconductor memory technologies are
divided into two categories:
1. RAMs are Random Access Memories, which
simply means that the access time for reads and
writes are symmetric.
2. Nonvolatile memories have traditionally been
ROM (Read Only Memory) until the advent of
floating gate technology, which produced electrically
erasable memories such as Flash and EEPROM.

Definition
During the last two decades, there has been an exponential growth in the operational speed of microprocessors. Also RAM capacities have been improving at more than fifty percent per year. However the speed and access time of the memory have been improving at slower rate. In order to keep up in performance and reliability with processor technology it is necessary to make considerable improvements in the memory access time.

In 1984 Drs. Arthur Pohm and Jim Daughton, both employed at that time by Honeywell, conceived of a new class of magnetoresistance memory devices which offered promise for high density, random access, nonvolatile memory. Thyristor RAM ('T-RAM) is a new type of DRAM computer memory invented and developed by T-RAM Semiconductor, which departs from the usual designs of memory cells, combining the strengths of the DRAM and SRAM: high speed and high volume. Zero-capacitor (Z-RAM) is a novel DRAM computer memory technology .Based on the floating body effect of silicon on insulator (SOI) process technology. Z-RAM has been licensed by Advanced Micro Devices for possible use in future microprocessors.
