Traffic congestion is a major problem in many modern cities around the world. Traffic congestion has been causing many critical problems and challenges in major cities and towns. Travelling to different places within the city is becoming more difficult for travelers in traffic. Because of these congestion problems, people lose time, lose opportunities and become frustrated. Due to traffic congestion there is loss of productivity of workers, trade opportunities are lost, delivery is delayed, and therefore the cost is increasing.


Traffic congestion can also be caused by large delays of red light, etc. Traffic control systems operate on a timing mechanism that changes traffic lights after a given interval. The traffic lane waits until the green light, time setting is almost equal and fixed. A road was always full of vehicles and the lead time was short. Therefore, vehicles can not pass through in the time allowed. But the sub-lane has few vehicles and the go-ahead time is relatively long. So I propose the control of multiple traffic lights and the monitoring system. The system tries to reduce the possibilities of traffic jams, caused by traffic lights, to an extent. The system is based on ATmega16 and ARM7. The system contains infrared sensors that are mounted on one side of the road, respectively. The IR system is activated whenever a vehicle crosses the road between IR sensors. The microcontroller controls the IR system and counts the number of vehicles passing by road. Based on the number of different vehicles, the microcontroller makes the decision and updates the semaphore delays as a result. 

The traffic light is located some distance from the IR system. Thus, based on the vehicle count, the microcontroller defines different ranges for traffic light delays and updates them accordingly. Traffic accidents are one of the leading causes of death. An important indicator of survival rates after an accident is the time between accidents and when emergency medical personnel are sent to the scene. The elimination of time between the time an accident occurs and the time when first responders are sent to the scene decreases mortality rates. One method to eliminate the delay between the occurrence of the accident and the first responders' dispatch is to use automated accident detection and notification systems to detect traffic accidents and immediately notify the emergency personnel such as the ambulance using GPS.

Also the systems have facility to detect emergency vehicles. When an emergency car comes on the signal and the number of vehicles will be available in front of the emergency vehicle. Then the signal drops from RED to GREEN to pass the car by sending the signal from the emergency vehicle to the traffic light sensor system. As the signal will be RED for other vehicles, so there is no possibility of an accident.
