In general, the railroad doors are opened or closed manually by a gate. Information about the arrival of the train to open or close the door is received from the nearby station. But some railroad crossings are totally unmanned and many railroad accidents occur at these level unmanned crossings.
To avoid human intervention at full level crossings, we need to automate the process of controlling the railroad gate.
This project deals with an interesting way of automating the control of the railroad door where the door is opened or closed automatically detecting the arrival or departure of the train.
Operating principle
The operating principle behind the operation of this project lies in the operation of the IR sensor. In this project an infrared sensor of reflective type is used.
In the IR reflector sensor, the IR transmitter and the receiver are placed side by side. When there is no obstacle in front of the sensor, the IR rays transmitted by the IR transmitter will travel undetected, as there are no rays falling on the IR receiver.
If there is an obstacle in front of the pair of IR transmitter and receiver, the IR rays are reflected off the surface of the obstacle and impinge on the IR receiver.
This configuration can be configured to detect an object such as a train and, in turn, can be used to enable or disable loads such as motors with the help of the microcontroller.
