Indian Railways (IR notification mark) is a state-owned railway company responsible for rail transportation in India. It is owned and operated by the Government of India through the Ministry of Railways. It is one of the largest rail networks in the world comprising 117,996 km (73,319 mi) of track on a route of 66,030 km (41,030 mi) and 7,137 stations. In 2015-16, IR transported 8,101 million passengers annually or more than 22 Million passengers a day and 1,107 million tons of freight in the year. In 2014-2015, Indian railroads had revenues of $ 1,709 trillion ($ 25 billion), consisting of ₹1,118 billion (US $ 17 billion) in freight and ₹451.26 billion (US $ 6.7 billion) in passenger tickets .
Railways were first introduced to India in the year 1853 of Chattrapati Shivaji Term (CST) "Boriya Bandar" Bombay to Thane. In 1951 the systems were nationalized as a unit, the Railways of India, becoming one of the largest networks in the world. IR operates long-distance and suburban rail systems in a multi-gauge network of wide gauges, gauges and narrow gauges. It also has locomotive and coach production facilities in several locations in India, with assigned codes that identify its caliber, type of power and type of operation. Its operations span twenty-six states and three Union Territories throughout India, and it also has international connectivity to Bangladesh (with the Bangladesh Railway) and Pakistan (with the Pakistan Railways).
Indian Railways is the seventh largest commercial or utility employer in the world by number of employees, with more than 1,376 million employees from the latest figures published in 2013. The IR rolling stock comprises more than 245,267 freight cars, 66,392 passenger cars and 10,499 locomotives (43 steam, 5,633 diesel and 4,823 electric locomotives). Trains have a 5-digit numbering system and operate 12,617 passenger trains and 7,421 daily freight trains. As of March 31, 2016, 27,999 km (42.4%) of the total 66,030 km (41,030 miles) longitude of the route were electrified. Since 1960, almost all IR-electrified sections use 25,000 volts of AC drive through overhead catenary.
