Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) owned by the Government of India, is an engineering and manufacturing company based in New Delhi, India. Founded in 1964, BHEL is the largest manufacturer of power plant equipment in India. The company has been continuously earning profits since 1971-72, except for the fiscal year 2015-2016, and paying dividends uninterruptedly from 1976-77. It has been awarded the prestigious state of Maharatna (Big Gem) in 2013 by the Government of India for its outstanding performance and large scale. The elite list of companies in Maharatna contains a total of 7 gigantic public sector companies (PSUs) in India. Maharatna gives the Boards of these companies greater financial and operational autonomy.
History
BHEL was founded in 1964 and merged with BHEL in 1974. Developed the ability to produce a variety of electrical, electronic and mechanical equipment for all sectors including transmission, transportation, oil and gas and other allied industries. However, most of the company's revenue is derived from the manufacture and assembly of equipment for power generation. As of 2016, equipment supplied by BHEL accounted for approximately 55% of India's total installed capacity. In 1991, BHEL became a joint-stock company. By the end of 1996, the company had delivered more than 100 Electric Locomotives to Indian Railway and installed 250 Hydro-sets throughout India.
Forging ahead in a robust foundation of more than five decades of engineering excellence and embracing the glorious next phase of its growth, BHEL is an integrated manufacturer of power plant equipment and one of the largest engineering and manufacturing facilities in India In the design, Engineering, manufacturing, construction, testing, commissioning and maintenance of a wide range of products and services for central sectors of the economy, Energy, Transmission, Industry, Transportation (Railroads), Renewable Energy, Oil and Gas, Water and Defense with more than 180 products offered to meet the needs of these sectors. BHEL has been the base of the heavy electrical equipment industry in India since its incorporation in 1964.
The growth of BHEL has been synchronous with the achievement of self-sufficiency in the autochthonous manufacture of heavy electrical equipment. Of the available capacity of 35,000 MW per year for the manufacture of power plant equipment in the country, BHEL alone constitutes a gigantic capacity of 20,000 MW per year. An extensive network of 17 Manufacturing Divisions, 2 Repair Units, 4 Regional Offices, 8 Service Centers, 6 Overseas Offices, 6 Joint Ventures, 15 Regional Marketing Centers and the current execution of projects in more than 150 projects in the region. India and abroad corroborate the humungous scale and the size of its operations.
In addition to its achievements, BHEL has joined the elite club of select global giants with an installed base of more than 170 GW of power generating equipment worldwide. In the fiscal year 2015-16 the company has recorded the largest start-up of projects in its history. The greater focus on project execution has led BHEL to create a history by setting up / synchronizing a maximum of 15,059 MW of power throughout the year. This includes the highest power generation capacity in history, from 13,061 MW to the utilities segment of India, a quantum leap of 59% over the previous year. With this, BHEL has already reached 94% of the goal of capacity increase for Plan XII in the first 4 years. 55% of the supercritical assemblies commissioned in the country are contributed by BHEL, a testimony of their valuable contribution to the construction of the nation.
BHEL also has an overseas presence in 80 countries with accumulated installed capacity abroad of the power plants manufactured by BHEL near 10,000 MW including Belarus, Bhutan, Egypt, Indonesia, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Oman, Rwanda, Sudan, Tajikistan and the United Arab Emirates.
