Introduction
The millipede high-density data storage system is based on micromechanical (MEMS*) components borrowed from atomic force microscopy (AFM). Tiny depressions created with an AFM tip in a polymer medium represent stored data bits that can then be read back by the same tip. Data written in this way can also be erased using the same tip, and the polymer medium can be reused thousands of times. The recent increase in the use of hard, high strength and temperature resistant materials in engineering necessitated the development of newer machining techniques. Conventional machining or finishing methods are not readily applicable to the new materials like hastalloy, nitralloy, waspalloy, nimonics, carbides, ceramics etc.


Conventional machining processes when applied to these newer materials:
1. Are uneconomical,
2. Produce poor degree of surface finish and accuracy,
