abstract
The Bagger 288 (Excavator 288), built by the German company Krupp for the energy and mining firm Rheinbraun, is a bucket-wheel excavator or mobile strip mining machine. When its construction was completed in 1978, Bagger 288 superseded NASA's Crawler-Transporter, used to carry the Space Shuttle and Apollo Saturn V launch vehicle, as the largest land vehicle in the world at 13,500 tons.
The Bagger 288 was built for the job of removing overburden prior to coal mining in, Germany. It can excavate 240,000 tons of coal or 240,000 cubic metres of overburden daily.
The excavator is up to 220 m (721 ft) long and approximately 96 m (315 ft) high. The Bagger's operation requires 16.56 megawatts of externally supplied electricity. It can travel 2 to 10 m (6.6 to 33 ft) per minute (0.1 to 0.6 km/h). The chassis of the main section is 46 m (151 ft) wide and sits on 3 rows of 4 caterpillar track assemblies, each 3.8 m (12 ft) wide. The large surface area of the tracks means the ground pressure of the Bagger 288 is very small (17.1 N/cm2 or 24.8 psi); this allows the excavator to travel over gravel, earth and even grass without leaving a significant track. It has a minimum turning radius of approximately 100 meters, and can climb a maximum gradient of 1:18.
The excavating head itself is 21.6 m in diameter and has 18 buckets each holding 6.6 cubic meters (7.9 yd³) of overburden.
Application
• It is a bucket-wheel excavator for mining and digging purpose.
• It is used to carry the Space Shuttle.
• It is used to carry Apollo Saturn V launch vehicle

INTRODUCTION
Most Impressive Massive Excavator
Mobile strip mining machine
Built by the German company “Krupp”, completed in 1978.
Bagger 288 largest land vehicle in the world
It was built for the job of removing overburden prior to coal mining
It can excavate 240,000 tons of coal in a daily
BAGGER 288 FACTS
It took 5 years to design and manufacture it at a cost of $100 million
The excavator is approximately 240 m long and 96 m high & weight is 45,500 tons
Maximum digging speed is 10 meters per minute
I can excavate 240,000 tons of coal or 240,000 cubic meters of overburden daily
The Bagger's operation requires 16.56 megawatts of externally supplied electricity
It can travel 2-10 m (6-30 ft) per minute (0.1-0.6 km/h)
The chassis of the main section is 46 meters (151 feet) wide and sits on 3 rows of 4 caterpillar track assemblies, each 3.8 m (12.5 feet) wide
The excavating head itself is 21.6 m in diameter and has 18 buckets each holding 6.6 cubic meters of overburden.
HISTORICAL OVERVIEW
The Bagger 288 built by the
German company “Krupp”
Its construction was completed in 1978
The Bagger 288 is one of a group of similar sized and built vehicles, such as
Bagger 281 (1958)
Bagger 285 (1975)
Bagger 287 (1976)
Bagger 293 (1995)
Bagger 293, is the largest land vehicle in human history according to the Guinness Book of World Records.
Structure of Bagger
A bucket wheel excavator consists of a superstructure
Bucket wheel with a configuration of scoops which is fixed to a boom and is capable of rotating
A counterweight boom balances the cutting boom
Beneath the superstructure lay the movement systems
The superstructure of a BWE is capable of rotating about a vertical axis (slewing)
The cutting boom can be tilted up and down(hoisting)
How does it work?
Six expert work together to operate this machine.
Strong rotating bucket wheel excavators which dig hard pay material and overburden without drilling and blasting.
Material picked up by the cutting wheel is transferred back along the boom.
A discharge boom receives material through the superstructure from the cutting boom and carries it away from the machine.
A counterweight boom balances the cutting boom and discharge boom.
The Bagger's operation requires 16.56 megawatts of externally supplied electricity.
The Operators Cab
All of the sensors feed into a computer system loaded 3D Machine Control Software.
The software calculates (in real time) all positioning information.
A radio system wirelessly transmits this data in real time back to the mining office
A command and control center receives this data and send data to BWE over the same wireless network.
Basic Components
Bucket wheel
New Technology Meets Traditional Brawn
GNSS receiver
Axial sensors
Automation
ADVANTAGES
It can excavate 240,000 tons of coal or 240,000 cubic meters of overburden daily.
It reduces human effort.
It is versatile in nature.
The Bucket boom has two degree of freedom.
It has a minimum turning radius of approximately 100 meters.
It performs more effectively and efficiently than a normal machine.
The large surface area of the tracks means the ground pressure of the Bagger 288 is very small.
DISADVANTAGES
It occupies lot of space.
It consume more power for operation
Mobility is very less about 600mt/hour due to its large size and heavier weight
APPLICATIONS
It is a bucket-wheel excavator for open pit mining and digging purpose.
It is used to carry the Space Shuttle.
It is used for handling the coal in thermal plants etc.
CONCLUSION
In this seminars, I have presented the revolutionary development and working of Bagger 288. This name is not quite familiar to all the peoples but still it is the world largest digging machine. I have tried my best to put up all the relevant information regarding this awesome machine.
Bagger 288 has brought a revolution in the growth of not only nation but the whole world.
We can get more & more power in this field by making a suitable technology by knowing today.
