An electronic voting machine consists of two units - a control unit and a voting unit - joined by a five-meter cable. The Control Unit is with the President Officer or a Voting Officer and the Voting Unit is placed inside the voting compartment. Instead of casting a ballot, the voting officer in charge of the control unit will press the ballot button. This will allow the voter to cast his vote by pressing the blue button of the Voting Unit against the candidate and the symbol of his choice.
Voting is the only criterion for electing their representatives in any democracy, so this whole process must be done with the utmost care so that only a fair and meritorious candidate is chosen based solely on public opinion. In earlier times, elections were conducted using a ballot system whereby people cast their votes to their favourite candidate, simply by putting a seal against their name, but this method often suffered several flaws such as theft of Votes and unfair results . To overcome all these discrepancies, an electronic voting machine was designed. But the design of a simple electronic voting machine with removable memory card was not enough, since access to the memory card for one minute can alter all votes with some other malicious code. So we need the system that could provide some better way to implement the electronic voting machine. Since we all know that it is very difficult to manipulate signals, we have designed the electronic voting machine in VHDL using XILINX ISE 9.2i as a platform that can be implemented in FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) hardware using the SPARTAN 3E kit. Since FPGA have built in RAM and each vote requires only a little memory, this application is quite memory and cost efficient. In addition, this implementation also contains a password that by itself is digital in nature and is very difficult to hack.
