The textile industry in India traditionally, after agriculture, is the only industry that has generated enormous employment for both skilled and unskilled labour in textiles. The textile industry remains the second largest sector of employment generation in India. It offers direct employment to over 35 million people in the country. The share of textiles in total exports was 11.04% during April-July 2010, according to the Ministry of Textiles. During the period 2009-2010, the Indian textile industry was linked to US $ 55 billion, of which 64% served domestic demand. In 2010, there were 2,500 fabric factories and 4,115 textile finishing factories throughout India. According to AT Kearney's 'Retail Apparel Index', India was ranked as the fourth most promising market for clothing retailers in 2009.

India is the world's leading jute producer and accounts for 63% of the world market for textiles and clothing. India occupies the second place in the world textile industry and also in the production of silk and cotton. 100% of FDI is allowed via automatic route in the textile sector. Rieter, Trutzschler, Soktas, Zambiati, Bilsar, Monti, CMT, E-land, Nisshinbo, Marks & Spencer, Zara, Promod, Benetton and Levi are some of the foreign textile companies invested or working in India.
The handloom industry is one of the oldest home industries in the Salem district of Tamil Nadu, India. Sari, dhoti and angavasthram are made of silk yarn and cotton yarn. In the recent past, home decor articles are also woven mainly for export purposes. More than 75,000 hand looms are working and the total fabric value produced per year is estimated at Rs.5,000 crores.

The history of hand looms and spinning mills goes back to the pre-independence period in Salem. But until the 1960s there were only less than 5 spinning mills. The private manual loom began to thrive in the region, along with the large-scale weaving and marketing units of the cooperative sector. Small-scale dying units were started around the region to support the industry. Around 1980 the texindustry saw massive growth. Many of the major mill spinning mills and spinning mill units emerged. Many Handloom societies and dye houses were established. New and growing number of Power Loom units in places like Gugai, Ammapet, Attayampatti, Vennandur, Magudanchavadi, Rasipuram, Komarapalayam and Pallipalayam, Jalakandapuram and Ellampillai. But now there are more than 125 spinning mills, with modern fabric units and garment units. Apparel export has established itself as one of the leading businesses in the district. The market links established by small business units that directly exported materials and clothing made the industry grow at an accelerated pace. Easy access to needed supplies like threads and dying units have led to personalization of garments, even to customized small-scale products.
