Indian soils are generally deficient in fertilizing elements, namely nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium and do not give high yields. Therefore, it is essential to feed these soils with chemical fertilizers to increase their productivity. The significant contribution of chemical fertilizers can be seen in the impact of the Green Revolution on Indian agriculture. Production of food grains increased from a miserably low of 50.8 million tons in 1950-51 to 174 million tons in 2002-03. The health and growth of the fertilizer industry are vital to increase the growth of the agricultural sector, to meet the food requirements of the growing population, as well as to increase the contribution to exports. We can ignore the importance of fertilizers for food production only at the expense of the well-being of the nation.

The location of the fertilizer industry is closely related to petrochemicals. Approximately 70 percent of plants that produce nitrogen fertilizer use neptha as the basic raw material. That's why most fertilizer plants are located near oil refineries.
However, some fertilizer plants extract their feed material from the steel bullet, as well as coke and lignite. Phosphate fertilizer plants rely mainly on mineral phosphate which is available in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. Some plants are based on imported mineral phosphate. Sulfur is another important mineral used in the manufacture of fertilizers. This is available in Tamil Nadu. During the last years the transport of Neptha or Gas through railroads or pipes has facilitated the generalized distribution of fertilizer plants with priority to the location of the coast. The HBJ pipeline has given birth to six gas-based fertilizer plants in Vijaypur, Jagdishpur, Aonla, Gadipan, Babrala and Shahajahanpur.

Fertilizers are substances that supply one or more of the chemicals needed for plant growth. Fertilizers can be both organic and inorganic. According to industry experts it is said that there are sixteen elements that are absolutely necessary for the growth of plants. Of these sixteen elements are required in large quantities while the other seven are needed in smaller quantities.
Since agriculture is a very important sector, it goes without saying that the fertilizer industry is something that the Indian economy can not do without. The fertilizer industry in India is extremely vital as it manufactures some of the most important raw materials needed for crop production. The main objective of this industry is to ensure the entry of the primary and secondary elements necessary for the production of crops in the desired quantities.

The success of the agricultural sector in India depends to a large extent on the fertilizer industry. The benchmark that the food industry in India has established is mainly due to the many technically competent fertilizer production companies in the country.

India is home to numerous private first-class companies and government fertilizer companies. Ranging from fertilizers to seeds to fungicides many fertilizer companies in India are the main reason behind the success story of the sector in India.

In the current scenario, there are more than 57 large and 64 medium and small fertilizer production units under the Indian fertilizer industry. The main products manufactured by the fertilizer industry in India are phosphate based fertilizers, nitrogen fertilizers and complex fertilizers. The fertilizer industry in India with its rapid growth is all set to make a long lasting global impression.
