Mathura Refinery

Mathura Refinery is the sixth refinery of Indian Oil, was contracted in 1982 with a capacity of 6.0 MMTPA to meet the demand for petroleum products in the northwestern region of the country, which includes the National Capital Region. Refinery is located along Delhi-Agra National Highway about 154 KM from Delhi. The main secondary processing units provided were Fluid Catalytic Degreasing Unit (FCCU), Vis-breaker Unit (VBU) and Bitumen Blowing Unit (BBU). The original technology of these units was obtained from the former USSR, UOP etc. EIL blowing drum technology was implemented in VBU in 1993. For the production of unleaded gasoline, the Continuous Catalytic Reform Unit (CCRU) was commissioned in 1998 with Axens technology, France. A Hydraulic Desulfurization Diesel Unit (DHDS) licensed from Axens, France for the production of HSD with a low sulfur content of 0.25% by weight (max.) Was launched in 1999. With the inauguration of Eleven Through Hydrocracker Unit (licensed by Chevron, USA) in July 2000, the capacity of the Mathura refinery increased to 8.0 MMTPA.

The Diesel Hydrotreating Unit (DHDT) and MS Quality Grading Unit (MSQU) were installed with world-class Axens and UOP technology respectively in 2005 for the production of Euro-III grade HSD & MS w.e. 1 of April of 2005 according to the auto fuel policy of Govt. from India. In February 2010, the FCC gasoline desulphurisation project (FCCGDS) and Selective Hydrogenation Unit (SHU), Axens Prime-G technology, France, and the supply of MS and HSD grade Euro IV Started in February 2010.
Mathura Refinery has its own captive power plant, which was augmented by the start-up of three gas turbines (GT) and a heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) in phases from 1997 to 2005 using natural gas as fuel To take care of environment.

To improve environmental standards, the former Sulfur Recovery Units (SRUs) were replaced by new Sulfur Recovery Units with a 99.9% recovery in 1999. The Additional Sulfur Recovery Unit is located in Phase of implementation as a reserve. The Mathura refinery had also set four ns. From continuous stations of Environmental Air Monitoring far beyond the work area prior to the start of the Refinery in 1982 as a sign of their concern for the environment and archaeological sites. Its proximity to the magnificent Taj Mahal adds additional responsibility towards maintaining a cleaner environment.

The Mathura refinery has planted 1,67,000 trees in surrounding areas including the refinery and municipality and 1,15,000 trees in the Agra region around Taj Mahal. The Ecological Park that stretches across 4.45 hectares, is a thriving green oasis in the heart of the extensive Refinery.

At the Mathura refinery  technology and ecology go hand in hand with continuous efforts to improve product quality, energy conservation and environmental protection. Mathura Refinery is the first in Asia and third in the world to receive the coveted ISO-14001 certification for the Environmental Management System in 1996. It is also the first in the world to obtain OHSMS certification for Safety Management in 1998.
