A carburetor (American and Canadian spelling), or carburetor, or carburetor, or carburetor is a device that mixes air and fuel for an internal combustion engine. It is sometimes colloquially abbreviated to carbohydrates in North America or carby in Australia. A carburate or carburet (and therefore carburation or carburetion, respectively) is to mix the air and fuel or to equip (a motor) with a carburetor for that purpose. Carburetors have been largely supplanted in the automotive industry and, to a lesser extent, in fuel injection aviation. They are still common in small engines for lawn mowers, rototillers, and other equipment. The carburetor is a device that is generally used to mix the air and fuel in the proper amounts, to achieve the sufficient air-fuel ratio necessary for the proper functioning of an engine.
