Weddings are colourful and festive events full of rituals and celebrations. People belonging to all strata of society take their savings for life and spend generously on their children's weddings. In the case of the daughter's marriage, the expense is much more than the son's wedding. The marriage of the daughter implies dowry. Mehdi's rituals add to the expenses of marriage. Normally, weddings are held in double rooms, apart from hotels where some rich find it more convenient to organize the wedding ceremony. Many empty spaces and plots of amenities have been legally or illegally converted into lawns and gardens of marriage.

But here we are concerned about the colossal waste of food at weddings that would otherwise have been saved and given to orphanages or shanty houses to feed their inmates. In Indian cities like Mumbai, orphanages and charities collect food from the marriage rooms in refrigerated vans and trucks for distribution to the indigent. Karachi lacks that kind of effort. We have thousands of people who can hardly handle a square meal a day and sleep on an empty stomach, apart from the millions who gather who are undernourished. Neither are we far from the sight of those kids exploring the garbage cans to find something to eat.

Food price inflation has averaged 18 percent over the last four years, while the purchasing power of the poor has declined significantly. Food prices have remained near an all-time peak since late 2010, pushing millions more into abject poverty. However, when it comes to the wedding, it is forgotten that many people are unsafe food because of food inflation, although you can see the food being served in the streets of Karachi by charities.

People at the wedding pick up more food from their plates than they can consume and the leftover waste finds its way into the trash bins. This is the case with most of the guests. About 58 percent of people in the country are food insecure, according to the results of the National Nutrition Survey (NNS) 2011. The situation has deteriorated with respect to the previous nutritional survey published in 2003, which had registered 50% of people with food insecurity. The situation has gone from bad to worse, especially in Sindh, where malnutrition and food insecurity among women and children has increased, says a spokesman for the World Food Program Amjad Jamal.

The country has enough food to feed its population, but the poor can not afford even two square meals a day, Jamal explains. According to estimates, about 15-20% of food is wasted in these functions. In some cases, the waste is 20 to 25 percent when the number of plates exceeds the number of guests to the marriage rooms. Responding to the questions, management of a matrimonial lawn said that basically restoration is not their responsibility, but added that based on their observations, waste is between 15-20 percent in most cases and More, if the number of plates are in excess. Suppliers admitted that the waste was huge since the buffet system was introduced to dinners. They put the waste in 20-25 percent. But if the arrangements are better and the service staff is careful, the waste can be reduced to 15-20 percent.

Taking the total number of social functions held in the city of Karachi alone and the average food waste by 15-20 percent losses are in tons. Just try to imagine the losses throughout the country. The food is prepared or ordered according to the number of invited guests. Meanwhile, guests usually do not inform their host if they can not attend the function, and therefore the prepared food is wasted. There is a need to enforce a ban on wedding banquets and only snacks, tea or cold drinks are allowed, or at best a broken platter with a limited number of guests to stop the type of waste they are passing. The alternative is also to encourage charities to collect leftover food through refrigerated vehicles for free distribution among the homeless.
