modbus communication with lpc2148

I am using UART for communicating 8 modules having LPC2148 microcontroller as a slave with another module having LPC2148 as master.But I am finding a constraint of wire length(I have read some articles on net which suggest a wire length of 2.6 mtrs for a baudrate of 56000bps) Can I replace this with MODBUS communication ?If yes where can I get information about modbus?
