INTRODUCTION:

The first public sector refinery of the country was built with Romanian collaboration and was dedicated to the nation by late Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on 1st January 1962. Since its inception Guwahati Refinery has been achieving numerous accolades for its performance in the fields of refinery operations, energy conservation, safety and environmental management.

With a capacity of 1.00 million metric tonesper annum, Guwahati Refinery processes crude oil received from the upper Assam oil fields and caters to the requirements of the petroleum products of the north-eastern region.


FIRE AND SAFETY DEPARTMENT


In an oil refinery there is risk of fire and explosion at every step. The plants of the refinery operates at high temperature and pressure which involves high fire and explosion risks. This calls for observance of all precautions measures to avoid fire accidents. It is therefore necessary that all persons working in the refinery should familiarize themselves with all the safety aspects, rules and regulations with respect to fire prevention, protection and fire fighting.


Fire protection facilities in refinery:
Fixed facilities:
1. booster pumps, tenders store for firefighting equipment
2. foam chamber connection to storage
3. water mains to supply water to any point beside the road.
Mobile facilities:
1. fire tender
2. fire trailers
3. foam or water monitors
4. fire extinguishers( water, DCP, Foam, carbon dioxide)
