In image science, image processing is processing of image using mathematical operations using any form of signal processing for which the input is an image, a series of images or a video, such as a photograph or a Video frame; The output of the image processing may be an image or a set of characteristics or parameters related to the image. Most image processing techniques involve treating the image as a two-dimensional signal and applying standard signal processing techniques. Images are also processed as three-dimensional signals, the third dimension being time or z-axis. Image processing usually refers to the processing of digital images, but the processing of optical and analog images are also possible. This article deals with general techniques that apply to all of them. The acquisition of images (which produce the input image first) is called the image.
Highly related to image processing are computer graphics and computer vision. In computer graphics, images are made manually from physical models of objects, environments and lighting, rather than being acquired (through image devices such as cameras) from natural scenes, as in most animation films . On the other hand, computer vision is often considered high-level image processing, of which a machine / computer / software is intended to decipher the physical content of an image or sequence of images (eg, 3D video or MRI of Full body scans).
In modern sciences and technologies, images also gain much broader scope because of the growing importance of scientific visualization (often large-scale complex scientific and experimental data). Examples include microarray data in genetic research, or real-time multi-asset trading portfolio in finance.
