While Apple's iPhone redesigned the term "smartphone" during its first two years of launch, Google's Android platform for mobile devices has quickly become a serious open source alternative. We explore the Android operating system (OS) and software development environment and evaluate several of its capabilities by building a working application. This application collected Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver speed and location information, used the Google Maps Application Programming Interface (API) to determine the location of nearby schools, and an alarm sounded if a person exceeded the limit Speed in a school zone. The platform proved to be able to support a merger of different services, and we believe that such smartphones have wide applicability to public security issues.
