Flexible AC transmission systems, so-called FACTS devices, can help reduce energy flow in overloaded lines, resulting in increased power system load capacity, less transmission line losses, higher Stability and security and, ultimately, transmission system. In order to find suitable FACTS locations more easily and with greater flexibility, a graphical user interface (GUI) based on a genetic algorithm (GA) is shown that is able to find the optimum locations and dimensioning parameters of FACTS devices of multiple types In large power systems. This easy-to-use tool, called FACTS Placement Toolbox, allows the user to select a power system network, determine the GA configuration, and select the number and types of FACTS devices to be assigned on the network. Next, the GA-based optimization process is applied to obtain optimum locations and classifications of the selected FACTS to maximize the system's static load capacity. Five different FACTS devices are implemented: SVC, TCSC, TCVR, TCPST and UPFC. Simulation results on IEEE test networks with up to 300 buses show that the FACTS placement toolbox is effective and flexible for analyzing a large number of scenarios with mixed FACTS types to be optimally located in multiple locations simultaneously.
