Track repair and resurfacing is a complex activity, requiring comprehensive assessment of engineering, selection of appropriate materials to problems and proper coordination of construction procedure, and activities. It also requires the establishment of airplanes of adequate quality and methods of quality assurance. For the renovation of the track it is necessary to determine the nature and extent of the deterioration and also the causes of the deterioration. For this, a detailed study, including an overall assessment of the projections, is essential to develop adequate repair alternatives.
Pavement condition surveys were conducted to identify and classify the type of damage, cause, and appropriate repairs. Cracks and deterioration of the surface were found. The specifications are given for the aggregate to be used and the design criteria for the mixture of dense asphalt concrete. Polymer modified bitumen (PMB) has better stiffness, elasticity, creep resistance, adhesion, fatigue strength and slip resistance than conventional binder material. In the case study, the binder chosen was thermoplastic elastomeric PMB-70. A reinforcing grid was included with a stress absorbing membrane interlayer. While new materials delayed cracking, long-term performance has yet to be proven.
