The interconnection facilitates the expansion of the system and helps to regulate the total system. Again, if a generator fails, power can be given to that area by virtue of the interconnected lines. These are some of the superior aspects of an interconnected transmission system. The connection of several exchanges in parallel is known as interconnected grid system.
Several advantages
(I) Interchange of maximum loads: An important advantage of the interconnected system is that the maximum load of the power plant can be exchanged. If the load curve of a power plant shows a maximum demand that is greater than the nominal capacity of the plant, then the excess load can be shared by other stations interconnected with it.
(Ii) Use of older plants: The interconnected system makes it possible to use the oldest and least efficient plants to carry maximum loads of short duration. Although such plants may be inadequate when used alone, however, they have sufficient capacity to carry short charge peaks when interconnected with other modern plants. Therefore, the interconnected system gives a direct key to the use of obsolete plants.
(Iii) Ensures economic operation: The interconnected system makes the operation of the power plants in question quite economical. It is because the load distribution between the stations is arranged in such a way that the most efficient stations work continuously throughout the year at a high load factor and the less efficient plants only work for the maximum load hours.
(Iv) Increment diversity factor: The load curves of different interconnected stations are generally different. The result is that the maximum demand in the system is greatly reduced compared to the sum of the individual maximum demands on different stations. In other words, the diversity factor of the system is improved, thus increasing the effective capacity of the system.
(V) Reduces the reserve capacity of the plant: Each power station must have an emergency reserve unit. However, when several power plants are connected in parallel, the reserve capacity of the system is greatly reduced. This increases the efficiency of the system.
(Vi) Increased reliability of the offer: The interconnected system increases the reliability of the offer. If a major breakdown occurs at one station, continuity of supply can be maintained by other healthy stations.
