An airbag is an inflatable cushion designed to protect car occupants from serious injury in the event of a collision. The airbag is part of an inflatable restraint system, also known as an airbag restraint system (ACRS) or a supplementary airbag retention system (SRS), because the airbag is designed to complement the protection afforded by seatbelts. Safety belts are still required to keep the occupant in place, especially in side impacts, rear impacts and rollovers. Upon detecting a collision, the airbags inflate instantly to cushion the exposed occupant with a pillow filled with large gas.

A typical air bag system consists of an air bag module (containing an inflator or gas generator and an air bag), shock sensors, a diagnostic monitoring unit, a steering wheel coil, and a pilot lamp. These components are interconnected by a wiring harness and powered by the vehicle battery. Airbag systems maintain a standby charge after turning the ignition off or after disconnecting the battery. Depending on the model, the standby power supply lasts between one second and ten minutes. Since vital components for system operation may remain inactive for years, the airbag circuits perform an internal "self-test" during each start-up, usually indicated by a light on the dashboard that glows briefly at each start.

Shock sensors are designed to prevent the air bag from inflating when the car passes over a pothole or a pothole, or in the event of a minor collision. The inflator fits a module consisting of a woven nylon bag and a plastic horn pad cover that is removed. The module, in turn, fits into the steering wheel for driver side applications and above the glove compartment for front passenger applications.

In a frontal collision equivalent to striking a solid barrier at nine miles per hour, the shock sensors located at the front of the car detect the sudden deceleration and send an electrical signal by activating an initiator (sometimes called a lighter Or buscapiés). Like a light bulb, an initiator contains a thin wire that heats up and penetrates into the propellant chamber. This causes the solid chemical propellant, mainly sodium azide, sealed inside the inflator to undergo a rapid chemical reaction (commonly called pyrotechnic chain). This controlled reaction produces harmless nitrogen gas filling the airbag. During deployment, the expanding nitrogen gas undergoes a process that lowers the temperature and removes most of the residue or ash from the combustion.

The expanding nitrogen gas inflates the nylon bag in less than a twentieth (1/20) of a second, opening its plastic module cover and inflating in front of the occupant. When the occupant comes into contact with the bag, the nitrogen gas is vented through openings in the back of the bag. The bag is fully inflated only one tenth (1/10) of a second and is almost deflated by three tenths (3/10) of a second after impact. Talc powder or corn starch is used to align the inside of the air bag and is released from the air bag as it opens.
