The overarching vision is to develop programs that can have a high academic level and have an international reputation in a wide range of areas within the context of Urban and Regional Planning including Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The Department has moved quickly to the area of Spatial Information Technology with the recent establishment of a Laboratory of Geographic Information Systems (GIS LAB) and the introduction of some new courses to complement existing Computer Applications in Planning in the Degree in Technology (B.Tech) Courses are GIS and Remote Sensing Techniques, Global Positioning Systems (GPS), GIS and Appropriation Analysis, Transportation Planning Computer Applications, GIS Applications in Urban and Regional Planning and Database Management Systems For Urban and Regional Planning. We are confident that this increase in the number of IT courses will soon help revolutionize teaching, learning and research in the department. The Department of Urban and Regional Planning was established in September 2002. The Department that originated in the late Polytechnic Calabar has always been among the first generation polytechnics in Nigeria, recognized by the National Diploma (ND) and the National Superior Diploma (HND) in Urban and Regional Planning. The Department maintained a high NBTE accreditation record of its continuing program.
The trip to the current state of the Department began in the academic year 2002/2003 when it was established as a complete department in the Faculty of Environmental Sciences. Since its modest beginning of only one student in the academic year 2002/2003, the Department has grown and today has a student population of more than 175 and a population of 23 teachers, including assistant, part-time and part-time teachers. The vast majority of the students in the Department are from the Cross River State and a considerable proportion of the remaining students are from neighboring states such as Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Delta, Edo, Ondo, Ekiti, Imo, Enugu, Anambra, Balyelsa, Ebonyi , Abia, Taraba, Kogi and Benue. In addition, most academic staff come from the states of Cross River and Akwa Ibom, while others are from other Nigerian states. The Department of Urban and Regional Planning obtained Interim Accreditation from the National Commission of Universities (NUC) in 2005 and full accreditation in 2007.
The result of the 2007 University Accreditation exercise and the National University Commission (NUC) program was launched in early 2008, the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, Cross River University of Technology, Calabar obtained 87.32 percent and Obtained full accreditation for his Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech). The program is staffed by highly qualified, professionally qualified staff that includes five (5 Numbers) Teachers, four (4 Núm.) NITP Fellow and Thirteen (13 Numbers). Generally, the Department has a total of sixteen (16 Numbers) of academic staff, two (2 Núm.) Of Technologists and four (4 Numbers) of non-academic personnel in its administration. The Department of Urban and Regional Planning recently received permission from the National Commission of Universities (NUC) to begin the Postgraduate Program in Urban and Regional Planning and Landscape Planning.
