A new device to help the blind to see has been developed by scientists. The electric lollipop or BrainPort vision device captures images using a small camera and then turns the image into tiny tingles on the tongue. Tingles are sent to the brain, which then turns the tingles into pictures. After a few days of practicing people, who otherwise could not see, they were able to distinguish shapes, read signs and even read letters. This amazing new device can help people to interact with their environment so never before experiences.

Using the unique resources of the DOE's national laboratories in materials science, microfabrication, microelectrode construction, photochemistry and computer modeling, the goal of the project is to build the device capable of restoring vision with materials that will last the life of a blind person . Just as blind people read words by touching Braille beats, some are now able to "see" objects through a special lollipop that stimulates their taste buds. The extraordinary device converts images captured by a tiny camera into a series of electric tingles, which can be felt on the tongue.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) there are 285 million people in the world with visual impairment. Of these, 39 million people are completely blind and 246 million people have low vision. In this modern world science has reached a point where nothing is impossible. Science has made great progress in the field of biotechnology. We have hearing aids for the hearing impaired, robotic arm for the paralyzed person. We all know that an eye is the very important part of our body. But, unfortunately, blind people can not see this beautiful world. So, is not there a device through which the blind person can see this world? Yes. Scientists have developed this device and the name of that device is Brainport Vision Device. This device is also known as a tasting device because it can savor and detect objects. This device is based on the idea of electro-stimulation for sensory substitution, the process in which if a part of the brain is damaged, then the part of the brain that normally controls the damaged part learns to perform some other function. The device is still under investigation and has not been commercially released, but the results obtained after testing the device on blind people were astounding and have indicated that there is a wide scope of application for this technology in the future
