Determine Training Needs

The Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004 (the Act) requires employers to provide such training to employees as is necessary to enable the employees to perform their work in a manner that is safe and without risks to health.
Various regulations made under the Act (eg Hazardous Substances Regulations, Plant Regulations) require employers to provide training to employees on:
the nature of hazards;
the processes used for hazard identification, risk assessment and risk control;
the need for, and proper use, of measures to control risk;
safety procedures; and
the use, fit, testing and storage of personal protective equipment.

Identify Training Needs:

The first step of any training program is identifying your employees' training needs. This is referred to as a "Training Needs Analysis". This is achieved by the identification of the difference between the skills and knowledge of an individual or group and the skills and knowledge they require to carry out a particular task.

Training methods and resources:

Don’t forget that though there are many external trainers who can help you, much effective training can be done ‘in house’.
Choose your methods, for example:
giving information or instruction;
coaching or on-the-job training;
training in the ‘classroom’;
open and distance learning;
in groups or individually; and
computer-based or interactive learning.

Deliver the training

Ensure the information is easy to understand and try to use a variety of training methods to deliver your message.
Ensure the trainer has enough time to prepare themselves, their resources and the venue – preparation is particularly important for people who are not experienced trainers.

Supervisor’s Responsibilities

Know, communicate, and enforce existing standards
Recognize the need for revised standards
Develop new procedures and rules when necessary
Train employees to follow all rules and procedures
