Drip-Irrigation
Rooted In Hope helps smallholder farmers improve water conservation and increase crop yields through the manufacture and distribution of small drip-irrigation systems. Our model is built from a low-cost design, making it affordable to even the poorest farmers. These ‘drip-kits’ direct water directly to plant roots and reduce water and crop loss due to poor irrigation. By implementing drip-irrigation, smallholder farmers are able to increase the variety of crops on their farms and produce higher yields, resulting in greater food security and income opportunities.
Climate change is causing farms to be more vulnerable to droughts, floods, pests, and other natural threats, only exacerbating the problems that small farmers face. With the increasing frequency, duration, and severity of drought conditions across much of the African continent, smallholder farmers are looking for new ways to ensure that their harvests are secured against unpredictable rains. Despite the dire need for climate-adaptation solutions, less than 6% of all cultivated land in Africa is irrigated, and almost all poor farmers are dependent on rainfed agriculture. Given that irrigated plots can more than double crop yields as compared to rainfed plots, the potential to achieve food, water, and income security through irrigation remains untapped across the African continent. Drip-irrigation in particular can play a key role in increasing crop yields, conserving water, and creating a source of income for smallholder farmers in rural Africa, creating a ‘triple-win’ towards more sustainable development.
Water-Harvesting
Rooted in Hope supports the construction of water harvesting systems in rural communities with limited water availability. The marginalized villages with which we work now have improved water security for drinking, cooking, and growing crops. As techniques are passed on from village to village, greater numbers of people are benefiting from sustainable water catchment and storage systems.
We also help to build water harvesting systems in rural primary and secondary schools in Kenya. Since the vast majority of these students spend several hours each day on water collection, increasing the water availability at schools can lead to significant impacts on their attendance, performance, and quality of education.
