Color constancy is the skill by which it is possible to tell the color of an object even under a colored light. I inter-
pret the color of an object as its color under a fixed canonical light, rather than as a surface reflectance function.
This leads to an analysis that shows two distinct sets of circumstances under which color constancy is possible.
In this framework, color constancy requires estimating the illuminant under which the image was taken. The estimate

This paper presents a zero tree coding method for color images that uses no lists during encoding and decoding,permitting the omission of the lists requirement in Said and Pearlman's Set Partitioning In Hierarchical Trees (SPIHT) algorithm . Without the lists, the memory requirement in a VLSI implementation is reduced significantly. This coding algorithm is also developed to reduce the circuit complexity of an implementation. We have done a detailed analysis of the visual properties of the HSV (Hue, Saturation and Intensity Value) color space and Human visual system. Using the results of these analyses, we determine relative importance of hue and intensity based on the saturation of an image pixel with respect to rod and cone cells excitation of retina.
