An intelligent fault diagnosis and operator support system targeting in the safer operation of generators and distribution substations in power plants is introduced in this paper. Based on Expert Systems (ES) technology it incorporates a number of rules for the real time state estimation of the generator electrical part and the distribution substation topology. Operation of power plant has become an important task for safe, reliable and efficient perormance of both power plant and power systems. Newly employed operators suffer from lack of experience for proper responce in emergency cases. Theoratical background and academic courses are not enough to train such operators. Power station simulators are expensive and are not usually available for specific power plant under consideration.
