Intel 8086 architecture



Today we’ll take a look at Intel’s 8086, which is one of the oldest and yet
most prevalent processor architectures around.
We’ll make many comparisons between the MIPS and 8086 architectures,
focusing on registers, instruction operands, memory and addressing
modes, branches, function calls and instruction formats.
This will be a good chance to review the MIPS architecture as well.

Features of 8086 Microprocessor

1) 8086 has 16-bit ALU; this means 16-bit numbers are directly processed by 8086.
2) It has 16-bit data bus, so it can read data or write data to memory or I/O ports either 16 bits or 8 bits at a time.
3) It has 20 address lines, so it can address up to 220 i.e. 1048576 = 1Mbytes of memory (words i.e. 16 bit numbers are stored in consecutive memorylocations). Due to the 1Mbytes memory size multiprogramming is m ....etc

Features of 8086
- 8086 is a 16bit processor. It’s ALU, internal registers works with 16bit binary
word
- 8086 has a 16bit data bus. It can read or write data to a memory/port either 16bits
or 8 bit at a time
- 8086 has a 20bit address bus which means, it can address upto 220 = 1MB memory
location
- Frequency range of 8086 is 6-10 MHz

REGISTER ORGANIZATION OF 8086
8086 has a powerful set of registers containing general purpose registers and special purpose registers. All registers of 8086 are 16 bit registers. The general purpose registers can be used as either 8 bit register or 16 bit registers. The general purpose registers are either used for holding data, variables and intermediate results temporarily or for the purposes like a counter or for storing offset address for some particular addressing modes etc. The special purpose registers, po ....etc

Pin configuration of 8085 and 8086 Microprocessors


8085 PIN DESCRIPTION
Some important pins are :
• AD0-AD7: Multiplexed Address and data lines.
• A8-A15: Tri-stated higher order address lines.
• ALE: Address latch enable is an output signal. It goes high when operation is started by processor .
• S0,S1: These are the status signals used to indicate type of operation.
• RD¯: Read is active low input signal used to read data from I/O device or ....etc
