Consider a parking lot with a single entrance and exit door. Two pairs of photo sensors are used to monitor the activity of automobiles, as shown in the figure below. When an object is between the photo transmitter and the photo receiver, the light is blocked and the corresponding output is reset to 1. When monitoring the events of two sensors, we can determine if a car is entering or exiting or if a pedestrian is on the way.
