The Kenyan Polytechnic College shares history with the development of the first three institutions of higher education in East Africa. In the 1920s there were more acute agitations over the expansion of access to higher education by indigenous leaders in the territories of East Africa. Concerted efforts in the form of committees, commissions and conferences led to positive developments including the rise of the Makerere Institute of Makerere University at the University of London in 1949, the proposal to establish the Royal Technical College (RTC) in Nairobi Construction began on January 25, 1952 and the establishment of the University College of Dar es Salaam in 1961.
RTC in Nairobi admitted the first cohort of students studying Architecture, Arts, Home Science and Engineering and Science in 1956. Simultaneously, another group of students enrolled in the Technical Institute of Kenya but admitted (in 1956) within the RTC enrollment In Nairobi. The Government of Kenya immediately initiated the development of the Kenya Technical Institute at its current headquarters within the Nairobi CBD in three phases.
