Image compression is an image processing technique widely used in various applications. Discrete wavelet transformations are the most popular transformation technique adopted for image compression. This paper presents the design and implementation of a Lifting-based DWT scheme for an efficient image compression method. This DWT-based elevation scheme is implemented using VHDL and image preprocessing such as resizing, colour conversion and pixel conversion are performed using MATLAB. The paper avoids the conventional method of complex mathematical calculation and construction is derived in the spatial domain. Our proposed method will give higher compression rate the modified focus consumes 2% area in Spartan 3 FPGA and operates at 104.091MHz. Therefore, it is suitable for applications that require high-speed image processing algorithms. The quality and size of the image data is constantly increasing. With the advancement in technology, many products on the market use images for control and visualization. Image compression is one of the main imaging techniques that are embedded in all electronic products. Rapid and optimal processing of these images is a major concern. For example, reducing the redundancy of image data in order to efficiently store or transmit data is a difficult task to perform. This paper presents a framework for a Discrete Wavelet Transformation system based on image processing. The approach helps the end user to generate images using DWT to a high level without any knowledge of low-level design styles and architectures.
