The Cripps Mission-1942
*After Japan’s entry into the second World war the entire political situation was changed. Japan conquered Malaya, Indo-China, Indonesia and Singapore. Alarmed by the Japanese, the British made another offer to Indian nationalists inorder to win their support. Accordingly, Prime Minister Churchill sent Sir Stafford Cripps, with fresh proposals of constitutional reforms.
*Cripps- Mission came to India on 22nd March 1942’.
*Sir Stafford Cripps was the Chairman of Cripps Mission.
*Cripps proposed that India would be given the Dominion Status immediately after the end of the war.
*It envisaged a federation of British India and the Indian states as a dominion within the British commonwealth.
* Both the Congress and the League rejected the offer.
Quit India Movement-1942
*The immediate cause of the Quit India Movement was the failure of the Cripps Mission.
*The Quit India Resolution was passed at the Bombay Session of INC on 8th August 1942.
*Gandhiji issued the Quit India speech on 8th August 1942 at Gbwalia Tank Maidan (presently known as August Kranti Maidan) in Mumbai.
*The Heroine of Quit India Movement - Aruna Asaf Ali.
*Jayaprakash Narayan is known as the hero of Quit India Movement.
*All the prominent leaders were arrested by the British government. Due to the arrest of major leaders, a young and till then relatively unknown Aruna Asaf Ali presided over the congress session on August 9 and hoisted the flag.
Slogans
*‘Quit India’, ‘Bharat Chodo’, ‘Do or Die’
*were the famous slogans of Quit India Movement.
*‘Divide and Quit’ was the new slogan adopted by Muslim League in Quit India Movement.
*Quit India movement was started on 9th August 1942.
*The draft of the Quit India resolution was prepared by - Jawaharlal Nehru
*Lord linlithgow was the viceroy at that time.
*Quit India paved the way for India’s freedom and aroused among Indians the feelings of bravery, enthusiasm and total sacrifice.
