A technology based on Zigbee wireless vehicle identification and driver authentication system consisting of a central database of authorized vehicles, RF Zigbee RF tags, RF tag reader and RF label writer. Zigbee is based on the IEEE 802.15.4 standard for Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPAN) that is used today in many commercial and research applications where it has become an attractive solution for low energy and low cost. The RF tag is placed on a vehicle that will approach the input of a facility, the RF tag reader is used to communicate with RF tags and the RF tag writer is used to program or write RF tags . The vehicle identification is performed by reading the serial number on the RF tag and the controller authentication is performed by a password entered through the RF tag. Both information is read through the 802.15.4 wireless interface through the RF tag reader and sent to a central database via Ethernet for verification. In order to improve data security, 128-bit Advance Encryption Standard (AES) was implemented in the Zigbee interface. This work is based on a prototype of the proposed system development and presents hardware and firmware aspects of the design. A vehicle identification device profile was defined and developed using the Zigbee Microchip protocol stack.
