Hands-on detection and monitoring of contactless people could be a powerful tool for healthcare, emergency, military and security applications. Remote sensing of heart activity and breathing has shown promise towards this end, with proven concept testing for various applications. A robust Doppler radar system would be well suited for the collection of long-term data from the cardiac interval for diagnosis and prognosis. The added benefits of microwave Doppler radar include the versatile ability to operate remotely through clothing, walls or debris. This allows the system to be applied in both medical care settings, where a degree of cooperation with the subject can be assumed, as well as in emergency responses or safety applications, where the subjects do not cooperate or can not co-operate. Alternative techniques for long-term medical monitoring typically require direct contact (ECG and Holter monitors, piezoelectric sensors), while minimally invasive techniques tend to require very precise control or placement (laser Doppler vibration), which is not always Possible or desirable. The use of infrared (IR) body heat sensors in search and rescue operations is limited due to poor IR propagation properties through walls, debris and weather. While Doppler radar offers distinct advantages, this approach has not been developed to the practical application level, mainly because there has been no genuinely effective way of isolating the desired target motion from other movements and other targets. Fortunately, through the application of the latest advances in wireless communications and signal processing technologies, Doppler cardiopulmonary radar now has the potential to transcend mere novelty and make a significant impact on health care and national security .
