Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, established in 1964, is one of the central companies of the public sector Maharatna of India. This is the sectors of energy, transmission, industry, transport, renewable energy, oil and gas and Defense. It has been awarded the prestigious Maharatna (large gem) state in 2013 by Govt of India for its exceptional and great performance scale. The elite list of companies in Maharatna contains a total of 7 gigantic public sector companies (PSUs) in India. Maharatna gives the Boards of these companies greater financial and operational autonomy.

Who are eligible to apply?

Students in the 4th and 6th semester of engineering (Electrical, Electronics, Civil, Informatics / Informatics, Mechanics, Metallurgy) can apply in BHEL through the Training and Placement Office of their university.

How to apply?

Students need to fill out the training form available at their university and contact the General Manager of the Human Resource Development Center at the BHEL office where they wish to enter. BHEL does not receive personal requests unless it has a strong contact there. The whole process of hiring interns is subject to the availability of mentors / guides and is not very transparent. Students are required to pay approximately Rs 500 per week for the internship.

What after applying?

There is no fixed interview process at BHEL. Interns who enter through contacts usually do not require any type of detection. Some inmates are interviewed over the phone and are asked to provide a letter of recommendation by a BHEL employee. Examples of questions that could be asked in the telephone interview are:

- What products does BHEL treat?
- Which division of BHEL are you interested in working with?
- How would working in that division help your career?
- What is the most interesting topic for you in your branch?

Depending on the flow, a specific division is assigned and required to be visited with the mentor assigned by BHEL. The internship can vary from four to six weeks. Initially, you will be introduced to different aspects of BHEL that are related to the assigned division. In the following weeks, a project will be given and at the end of the internship, the evaluation will be done on the basis of the project report. Some questions are asked by the human resources department while the evaluation,

- What was your project?
- Specific data on the project report.

Apart from the project, mentors constantly give assignments to be completed, but that depends entirely on the mentor.

Word of advice from former inmates: -

The importance of mentors- How much you learn during your internship will depend a lot on your mentor. You can always self-learn, but only a mentor can give a detailed view of the division. So it would be best if you try to make some contacts at BHEL and work under the direction of a known employee.

It is worth it, even if it is not a practical experience. The projects given imply the application of the knowledge acquired during the internship, but are not exactly part of something in progress at BHEL. For example, an inmate of the electronic branch was asked to develop an algorithm for the operation of a coffee machine. But at the end of the internship I would have a good idea of how things related to their field function and are made to work.

Environment conducive to learning - Mentors at most BHEL branches are very experienced and guide well. They are more than happy to help if they feel they are putting effort into learning. Otherwise, you will not exactly be paid anything extra for the tutoring, so do not expect them to look out for you.

Word of caution: BHEL is a manufacturing plant. Consequently, the working conditions are very abrupt. This is especially true for Civil, Mechanical and Metallurgical engineers. Do not expect to be seated in an air-conditioned office.
