What is WiMax?
WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) is a communication technology for wirelessly delivering high-speed Internet service to large geographical areas.
It is built on IEEE 802.16 standards
It is a new standard developed by the IEEE that focuses on point to multipoint broadband wireless networks.
Wi Max is both faster and has a longer range than
Wi-Fi.
It represents the next
generation 4G technology
Technological Details
Range :
30 mile radius from base station.
Speed :
70 Megabits per second.
Frequency bands:
2 to 11 GHz & 10 to 66 GHz
Why WiMax?
WiMax offers a metropolitan area network with a signal radius of about 50 km (30 miles).
Internet access:
WiMAX can provide at-home or mobile Internet access across whole cities or countries.
The WiMAX solution offers
high data throughput,
efficient data multiplexing, and
low data latency,
and is currently being deployed in two formats. Fixed WiMAX (802.16d):
Primarily utilized in fixed locations.
Competes with DSL and cable for high speed internet.
Mobile WiMAX (802.16e):
Aimed towards Mobile Internet
Provides users the convergence of broadband wireless connectivity in handheld devices.
ADVANTAGES
Coverage:
Provides coverage for hundreds of users at a time.
High Speed:
It operates and connects over a very high speed .
Multi-functionality:
Wimax Technology perform a variety of task at a time such as offering high speed internet, providing telephone service, transformation of data, video streaming, voice application etc.
Infrastructure:
Wimax infrastructure is very easy and flexible therefore it provides maximum reliability of network and consent to actual access to end users.
DEPLOYMENT
WiMAX access was used to assist with communications in Aceh, Indonesia, after the tsunami in December 2004. All communication infrastructure in the area, other than amateur radio, was destroyed, making the survivors unable to communicate with people outside the disaster area and vice versa. WiMAX provided broadband access that helped regenerate communication to and from Aceh.
WiMAX hardware was donated by Intel Corporation to assist the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and FEMA in their communications efforts in the areas affected by Hurricane Katrina. In practice, volunteers used mainly self-healing mesh, Voice over Internet Protocol(VoIP), and a satellite uplink combined with Wi-Fi on the local link.
MODES OF OPERATION
Non-Line of sight (data is transferred from tower to subscribers)
Uses a lower frequency range.
(2-11 GHZ)
Line of sight (data is transferred from one tower to another tower)
Uses a higher frequency range.
(66 GHZ)
How OFDM works ?
• The frequencies are spaced so that the signals do not interfere with each other (no cross talk)
• Parallel Data Transmission - Allows for the sending of multiple signals simultaneously from the same antenna (or wire) to one device
Each transmission has a different stream of bits
Infrastructure of WiMax
A WIMAX tower: similar in concept to a cell-phone tower. A single WIMAX tower can provide coverage to a very large area (3,000 square miles).
A WIMAX receiver : The receiver and antenna could be a small box or PCMCIA card, or could be built into a laptop.
How WiMax Works
WiMAX stations connect directly to the internet with a wired connection like T3.
It can also connect to another tower with line-of-sight.
The connection to the second tower is called a backhaul.
WiMAX APPLICATIONS
According to WiMax Forum it supports 5 classes of applications:
Multi-player Interactive Gaming.
VOIP and Video Conference
Streaming Media
Web Browsing and Instant Messaging
Media Content Downloads
CONCLUSION
It is expected that WiMax becomes the dominant standard for Wireless MAN in the world market, at least, in fixed broadband networks.
WiMax products will have to be delivered to the market needs and those for the end-users will have to be extremely easy to install.
Focus is too often on technologies like enabled services and broadband capabilities.
