The Internet has become one of the basic services for everyday life. Every human being has extensive access to knowledge and information through the Internet. However, blind people face difficulties in accessing these text materials, also in the use of any service provided over the Internet. The advancement in accessible computer-based systems has opened many avenues for visually impaired people around the world in a broad way. Feedback-based audio-like virtual environment, screen readers have helped blind people access Internet applications immensely. We describe the architecture of the voicemail system that can be used by a blind person to access emails easily and efficiently. The contribution made by this research has enabled the blind to send and receive voice-based email in their mother tongue with the help of a computer.
Communication is one of the most important aspects of human life. The world has become a global village after the integration of communication technologies with the Internet. And of all the different communication technologies available, e-mail is considered as one of the most widespread forms of communication. Emails have become a standard of communication with each other replacing the letters completely. Even after other technologies such as social networking are also taking over the Internet world, email is still the most ubiquitous form of business communication.
However, all these technologies can not be of any use to the visually impaired since all activities that can be performed on the computer are based on visual perception. Although advances have been made in the field of computing to enable visually impaired people to use these technologies, they still face some minor difficulties. As it is estimated that almost 285 million people worldwide have visual impairments, it is necessary that the Internet facilities for communication be useful for them as well.
This project aims to develop a voice-based email system that would help visually impaired people access e-mail in a hassle-free way. Along with providing the use of mail services easily and efficiently, the system will also reduce the cognitive workload that has to be normally taken by the visually impaired to remember and write characters using the traditional Braille keyboards at their disposal. The GUI for this system has been evaluated based on the interface of the traditional mail system available. Together with the blind, illiterates can also benefit from this system.
The most important aspect to be considered during the development of this system is that users of this system do not need to have basic information about the keyboard shortcuts used or where the keys are located. All functions that will be used in this system will be based on simple mouse click operations that make the system very easy to use.
