CHAPTER ONE: INTRODUCTION
1.1 OVERVIEW
This report contains the research findings of two members of a team at the Bank of Uganda, from
Makerere University, Faculty of Technology as requirement for the partial fulfillment of the
acquisition of a Bachelor of Science in Telecommunications Engineering.
Project research was carried out in a period of about four month from February, 2010. The
manner in which the project was conducted was decided upon by the project members before the
start of the research, but was adjusted during project commencement because of the better
understanding of the concepts involved deep into the research.
In concept, today’s business climate is more challenging than ever and businesses are under
constant pressure to lower costs while improving overall operational efficiency. In short,
businesses are being asked to “do more, for less”.
In the IT sense, virtualization is a mechanism of presenting a set of logical computing resources over a fixed
hardware configuration so that these logical resources can be accessed in the same manner as the original hardware
configuration. Virtualization has recently become popular as a means to consolidate servers and reduce the costs of
hardware acquisition, energy consumption, and space utilization. On the other, hardware resources that can be
virtualized include computer systems, storage, and the network.
Server virtualization in particular as a mainstream technology has easily identifiable benefits that
are strongly aligned with organizational expectations, business drivers for IT, and actual server
virtualization use cases. Specifically judging from the enormous investment in network server
resources evident in IT firms today, virtualization provides a possible escape through
consolidation which results into optimal utilization and saving of hardware resources as well as
redundancy and isolation which provide availability and flexibility.
1.3 PROJECT TITLE1
Practical Insights on Server Virtualization in an Enterprise Network. The case of the Bank of
Uganda Computing Environment.
1.4 PROBLEM TO BE ADDRESSED
Server virtualization can deliver immediate benefits to any organization. Not only will the
organization save money and optimize utilization of servers, but also ease management and
disaster recovery, a key issue in today’s enterprise networks.
To cut a little bit deeper, various statistics including those obtained from the bank of Uganda
show that servers have an average utilization of around 20% (CPU). Server virtualization,
through consolidation can be used to optimize their usage, and at the same time freeing up some
server resources that can be utilized in other more beneficial ways, like providing spares,
redundancy for backup, and load balancing.
More still, Power can be saved significantly if a number of servers cease to be used in the
production process.
Although, not all the problems that can be solved as stated above call for a solution in the Bank
of Uganda enterprise network, optimization in general is required, and server virtualization on a
large scale provides a way out.
1.5 OBJECTIVE(S)
The objectives of the research were divided into two categories, one main objective dictated
upon by the organization and a number of specific objectives mainly set by the project members.

To propose a solution that could be used to replace the existing physical server environment with
a virtualized server environment.
1.5.2 Specific Objectives
 Sizing of a proposed server virtualization solution
 Providing practical insights on how to migrate from a physical to a virtualized server
environment
 Ultimately realise the envisaged benefits of server virtualization practically
1.6 EXPECTATIONS
Our expectations at the end of the research were to document and address the issues listed below
as were found relevant for any server virtualization from a number of references (see reference
[1], [2], [5] and [7]).
i. Virtualization technique and justification
ii. Architecture to be adopted
iii. Impact analysis, both financial and technical
iv. Security concerns and possible remedies
v. Procedure of achieving flawless migration from physical to virtual environment
vi. Recovery and backup procedures
vii. Rising issues
On a personal level, completion of the research paper would imply immense acquisition of
knowledge about virtualization, and aspects that closely operate with it.
1.7 CONCLUSION
This chapter intends to introduce the project and its scoop, plus a detail about the firm onto with
the research was mainly based.

CHAPTER TWO: LITERATURE REVIEW
2.1 OVERVIEW
There are several ways of compiling literature about virtualization. In this chapter, literature was
obtain from a number of online journals, books and papers, cutting out the would be relevant to
the successful completion of the methodology, and hence report.
In context, virtualization is one of those words that have been gaining immense popularity with
IT professionals and executives alike. Promising to reduce the ever-growing infrastructure inside
current data center implementations, virtualization technologies have cropped up from dozens of
software and hardware companies. But what exactly is it? Is it right for everyone? And how can
it benefit your organization?
Virtualization has actually been around more than three decades. Once only accessible by the
large, rich, and prosperous enterprise, virtualization technologies are now available in every
aspect of computing, including hardware, software, and communications, for a nominal cost. In
many cases, the technology is freely available (thanks to open-source initiatives) or included for
the price of products such as operating system software or storage hardware.
Well suited for most inline business applications, virtualization technologies have gained in
popularity and are in widespread use for all but the most demanding workloads. Understanding
the technology and the workloads to be run in a virtualized environment is the key to every
administrator and systems architect who wishes to deliver the benefits of virtualization to their
organization or customers.
This chapter will introduce you to the core concepts of server virtualization. This chapter will
also illustrate the potential benefits of virtualization to any organization.

2.2 WHAT IS VIRTUALIZATION?
So what exactly is virtualization? Today, that question has many answers. Different
manufacturers and independent software vendors coined that phrase to categorize their products
as tools to help companies establish virtualized infrastructures. Those claims are not false, as
long as their products accomplish some of the following key points:
 Add a layer of abstraction between the applications and the hardware.
 Provide the isolation of computer resources for improved reliability and security.
 Eliminate redundancy in, and maximize the utilization of, IT infrastructures.
 Improve service levels and the quality of service.
But to answer the question “What is virtualization?” we must first discuss the history and origins
of virtualization, as clearly as we understand it.
2.2.1 Definitions Relevant to server Virtualization
In discussing virtualization, a number of terms (that are often misused) are helpful to define,
although these are not exhaustive definitions.
2.2.1.1 Disaggregation/Server Virtualization
Disaggregation of servers allows multiple independent instances of an operating environment to
run on a single server (dividing one physical server into multiple virtual servers). This type of
virtualization allows for the consolidation of multiple, underutilized, physical servers onto one
server with higher system utilization—reducing management overhead, floor space, power, and
cooling requirements.
Server virtualization can be implemented in a variety of ways, with pros and cons associated
with each. Implementation approaches include emulation, para-virtualization, hypervisors,
hosted approach and OS virtualization,

2.2.1.2 Aggregation
When virtualization of physical resources involves combining multiple servers to act as one
system, it is also known as aggregation. Clustering is a way of aggregating systems.
2.2.1.3 Storage Virtualization
Storage virtualization applies an abstraction to the storage systems within the enterprise and is
often a key component used with blade systems. Virtualizing the storage allows virtual disks to
be defined to components running on the server and separates the physical management and
sometimes connection of those disks from the application software on the server. Storage
virtualization can be implemented within the server (host-based), within the storage area network
(network- or fabric-based), or within the storage subsystem.
These solutions may take an in-band approach, in which the device that does the virtualization is
in the data path, or an out-of-band approach, in which the device that performs the virtualization
is not in the data path.
2.3 HISTORY OF VIRTUALIZATION
In its conceived form, virtualization was better known in the 1960s as time sharing. Christopher
Strachey, the first Professor of Computation at Oxford University and leader of the Programming
Research Group, brought this term to life in his paper Time Sharing in Large Fast Computers.
Strachey, who was a staunch advocate of maintaining a balance between practical and theoretical
work in computing, was referring to what he called multi-programming. This technique would
allow one programmer to develop a program on his console while another programmer was
debugging his, thus avoiding the usual wait for peripherals. Multi-programming, as well as
several other groundbreaking ideas, began to drive innovation, resulting in a series of computers
that burst onto the scene. Two are considered part of the evolutionary lineage of virtualization as
we currently know it—the Atlas and IBM’s M44/44X.
