The Guru Nanak Dev (ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਵ ਥਰਮਲ ਪਲਾਂਟ ਪਲਾਂਟ) thermal plant in Bathinda is one of three thermal power stations in Punjab (the other is in Lehra Mohabat and Ropar). It is a medium-sized power plant with four units that began to be built in the early 1970s and ended in 1982. The total generates up to 460 MW (2x110 + 2x120 MW) of power that satisfies the gigantic irrigation needs of the Lower Punjab. There has been some claim that the power plant does not live up to contemporary environmental safety standards, has led to serious health problems, not only in Bathinda itself but also nearby cities and towns, especially the problem of Fly ash. Named after the first guru and founder of Sikhism, Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji.

Guru Nanak Dev Thermal Plant is situated in Bathinda (Punjab) in Bathinda-Malout Road. The first stone of this prestigious Thermal Power Plant, made up of four units of 110 MW each, was placed on November 19, 1969, the year of the fifth centenary of the birth of the great Guru Nanak Dev Ji from whom he derives his current name.
The historic city of Bathinda was selected for this first and prestigious state thermal power project due to its good rail connections for the rapid transport of coal, the availability of water from the canal and the proximity of the cargo center. This project was completed in two phases at a total cost of about 115 rupees. The first unit was commissioned in September 1974 and the others were subsequently commissioned in September 1975, March 1978 and the last in January 1979. The commissioning of these units not only helped bridge the gap between supply and demand. Demand in Punjab but also solved the chronic low voltage problem prevailing in the Malwa region. It is a source of pride that this plant has been operating successfully since its commissioning.
This plant has won many national awards such as Govt's Meritorious Productivity Awards. from India. GNDTP, Bathinda has also been accredited with ISO: 9001: 2008.
Bathinda GNDTP unit 1 or 2, when operated at full capacity, is capable of generating 26.4 lac electricity units in one day and unit 3 or 4 when operating at full capacity is capable of generating 28.80 units Lac in one day. The consumption of coal is from 1800 to 1900 MT per unit depending on the quality of the coal. The total daily requirement for coal is approximately 7400 M.T. (Approximately two rakes of 58 wagons each) when all four units are in operation. Coal supplies are being received from Jharkhand, which is more than 1500 KMs from this power station. The fly ash generated is being used by the M / S Ambuja cement factory and by other different industries.
