This typically mechanical device requires a person wishing to access a particular input to turn a left and right knob in a given sequence. If the sequence is correct, the entry will be unlocked; Otherwise, the input will remain locked, without transmitting any information about the required sequence. In the lab this week, we will try to recreate this conventional mechanism in digital form on the Spartan 3E plate. To achieve such a feat, we introduce the Moore machine, which is a type of Finite State Machine (FSM), and the state diagram, which is a convenient way to represent an FSM. For the prototype of our lock combination, we will make use of the swivel knob and the LCD screen on the Spartan 3E plate. The exercises in this laboratory serve to reinforce the concepts treated in the class.
