A transatlantic tunnel is a theoretical tunnel that would span the Atlantic Ocean between North America and Europe, possibly for purposes such as mass transit. Some proposals include technologically advanced trains that reach speeds of 500 to 8,000 kilometers per hour (310 to 4,970 mph). Most of the tunnel conceptions envisage it between the United States and the United Kingdom - or more specifically between New York and London. Advantages compared to air transport could be higher speed, and the use of electricity rather than fuel-based sparse oil, taking into account a future long time after peak oil.
The main obstacles for the construction of such a tunnel are the cost, with estimates of between $ 88 billion and $ 175 billion, as well as the limits of the current science of materials. Existing large tunnels, such as tunnel Channel, Seikan and the Gotthard Base Tunnel, expensive technology that no proposal for the transatlantic tunnel, fights financially.
