The problem of safety in tunnels is considered,
with particular concern to the vulnerability to fire. The important
role that robotics may play for fire fighting and preventing

Pune - Satara Section of the National Highway NO.4 passes through Katraj Spur of the Western Mountain Range between Pune and Shirwal. Existing highway is a two-lane road with quite a few sharp bends and steep sections. Existing highway also passes through a 275 m long two-lane tunnel located in the Katraj Spur. In view of the space limitations it was considered that straightening out existing sharp curves was almost an impossible task. Loads on Tunnels
• The most important potential loads acting on underground structures are earth/rock pressures and water pressure.
• Live loads due to vehicle traffic on the surface can be safely neglected, unless the tunnel is a cut and cover type with a very small depth of overburden.
