Traffic congestion alert system using GSM: 

The increase in the number of vehicles has led to traffic congestion. During one-day work hours, traffic is at its peak and there are several problems related to traffic congestion. One of these problems is fuel consumption. An average of 90 minutes is spent daily by a vehicle in congested traffic. People forget to turn off the engines that cause the waste of non-renewable resources such as gasoline, diesel and LPG. One car spends 2.5 liters of fuel and two wheels discharge 0.75 liters of fuel in the traffic jam per day. The cost of fuel wasted by the city car is 7.5 cr and two-wheels are 2.5 cr per day. The government subsidy on spent fuel is 1.5 cr per day. This incurs a heavy loss of income for the country.

For emergency conditions like ambulance, firefighters to pass, congestion poses an obstacle. To recover for the time lost in congestion people tend to rush and disperse congestion, causing accidents. Indian roads witness an accident every minute and a death in a road accident every four and a half minutes, according to the latest report from the ministry of roads, transportation and roads. Similarly, the report estimates that these accidents on the road left 5.2 lakh people injured. The smoke released from the vehicles and horn honking causes air pollution and noise. India is the world's fourth largest emitter of carbon dioxide, with emissions of 1.34 billion tonnes a year behind China, the United States and Russia. Even if India keeps its promise to keep its per capita emissions lower than that of the developing economies, we will soon surpass Russia to become the third largest emitter. To overcome these problems, a system must be designed that can alert to congestion. "Traffic congestion alert system using GSM" does what is necessary and therefore helps reduce traffic congestion.

"Traffic Congestion Alert System with GSM" automatically alerts the traffic congestion condition. It can be implemented on rails and junctions that carry heavy traffic. The sensors are placed on roads to control the traffic condition. At each junction a transmitter and receiver will be present along with an LCD display for message display. When a congestion is reported, an alarm is sent to the controller and the corresponding alert, the LANE BUSY message is sent to neighboring unions. The GSM modem (SIM 300) is used to transmit and receive messages in the GSM network. The alert message is received at the surrounding junctions using the GSM modem (SIM 300). This message will be displayed on the respective LCD. Therefore, the pilot is previously alerted of the congestion condition. This facilitates the pilot to take a route free of alternative congestion, avoiding getting trapped in the bottleneck (congestion). After the particular lane is cleared, the LANE CLEAR message is also displayed. This helps to divert traffic and thus reduce congestion.
