Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) owned by the Government of India, is an engineering and manufacturing company based in New Delhi, India. Founded in 1964, BHEL is the largest manufacturer of power plant equipment in India. The company has been continuously earning profits since 1971-72, except for the fiscal year 2015-2016, and paying dividends uninterruptedly from 1976-77. It has been awarded the prestigious state of Maharatna (Big Gem) in 2013 by the Government of India for its outstanding performance and large scale. The elite list of companies in Maharatna contains a total of 7 gigantic public sector companies (PSUs) in India. Maharatna gives the Boards of these companies greater financial and operational autonomy.
History
BHEL was founded in 1964 and merged with BHEL in 1974. It developed the ability to produce a variety of electrical, electronic and mechanical equipment for all sectors including transmission, transportation, oil and gas and other related industries. However, most of the company's revenue is derived from the manufacture and assembly of equipment for power generation. As of 2016, equipment supplied by BHEL accounted for approximately 55% of India's total installed capacity. In 1991, BHEL became a joint-stock company. By the end of 1996, the company had delivered more than 100 Electric Locomotives to Indian Railway and installed 250 Hydro-sets throughout India.
Operations
BHEL is dedicated to the design, engineering, manufacture, construction, testing, commissioning and maintenance of a wide range of products, systems and services for the main sectors of the economy, Energy, transmission, industry, transport, renewable energy, oil and Gas and defense. It has a network of 17 manufacturing units, 2 repair units, 4 regional offices, 8 service centers, 8 overseas offices, 15 regional centers, 7 joint ventures and infrastructure that enables it to execute more than 150 projects on sites in India and abroad. The company has established the capacity to deliver 20,000 MW p.a. Power equipment to meet the growing demand for power generation equipment.
BHEL has maintained its leadership position in the market during 2015-16 with a 74% market share in the electricity sector. An improved approach to project execution allowed BHEL to record its highest commissioning / synchronization of 15059 MW of power plants in the domestic and international markets in 2015-16, marking a 59% increase over 2014-15. With the all-time high commission of 15,000 MW in a single year FY2015-16, BHEL has exceeded 170 GW installed base of power generation equipment. It has also been exporting its energy and industry segment products and services for over 40 years. BHEL's global references are distributed in more than 76 countries on six continents. BHEL's installed capacity abroad exceeds 9,000 MW in 21 countries, including Malaysia, Oman, Iraq, United Arab Emirates, Bhutan, Egypt and New Zealand. Its physical exports range from turnkey projects to after-sales services.
