Abstract

The performance based seismic design of Steel moment resisting frame structures aimed at controlling the structural damage based on precise estimations of proper response parameters. The primary focus of this study is on the development of a detailed assessment of the inelastic seismic behavior, response, and performance of typical ductile Steel moment resisting frame structures. This research tries to assess the Strength based and Displacement Based Design method for steel moment resisting frames and develop a reliable design method for them so that they withstand various seismic levels within certain performance levels. For this purpose analytical models are evaluated using nonlinear static pushover analysis and dynamic time history analysis, to evaluate the potential for collapse in Steel moment resisting frames structures.

Abstract

Performance based seismic design evaluates how a building is likely to perform for given earthquake loads. Seismic performance of a structure is closely associated with its strength, stiffness and ductility. In the present study structural strength and ductility mainly considered for the performance level for a steel moment resisting frame structure. The structure is analyzed according to Indian seismic code provision elastically under equivalent lateral force and designed by limit state design method to provide sufficient strength to resist the design earthquake. In performance based seismic design, building functionality is an important as structural damage. Structural displacement is considered as a performance indicator in addition to strength. This research tries to assess the Strength based and Displacement Based Design method for steel moment resisting frames and develop a reliable design method for structure so that they withstand various seismic levels within certain performance levels. For this purpose analytical models of steel moment resisting frames are evaluated using nonlinear static pushover analysis and dynamic time history analysis to check the target displacement.
