INTRODUCTION TO VIZAG STEEL PLANT
Visakhapatnam Steel Plant under Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited is the first coastal based steel plant of India. It is continuously growing company by producing steel at international standards as well as through strategic diversification of production services. It is the most sophisticated and modern integrated steel plant in the country.
Bestowed with modern technologies, Visakhapatnam steel plant has an installed capacity of 3 million tonnes per annum of liquid steel and 2656 million tonnes of saleable steel at VSP there is emphasis on total automation, seamless products to meet stringent demands of discerning customers within India and abroad.
Visakhapatnam steel plant products meet exalting international quality standards such as JIS, DIN, BIS, BS etc. Visakhapatnam steel plant has the distinction to be the first integrated steel plant in India to become fully ISO-9001 certified company.
 Vizag steel plant has been conferred Navratna status on 17 November 2010.

Mission:
To attain 16 million tonne (Mt) liquid steel capacity through technological up-gradation Operational efficiency and expansion; to produce steel at international standards of cost and Quality; and to meet the aspirations of the stakeholders.
Objectives:
1. Expand plant capacity to 6.3 Mt by 2010-11 with the mission to expand further in Subsequent phases as per the corporate plan.
2. Be amongst top five lowest cost steel producers in the world by 2009-10.
3. Achieve higher levels of customer satisfaction than competitors.
4. Vibrant work culture in the organization.
5. Be recognized as an excellent business organization.
LOCATION
The plant is located on the coast of Bay of Bengal, 16KMS. to the south west of the Visakhapatnam port. It lies between the northern boundaries of national highway 5 from Chennai to Kolkata and 7KMS to the south west of Howrah madras railway line.
PRODUCTS
VSP produces angles, channels, bars, wire rods and billets for rerolling. The plant also provide pig iron around 1.44 million tonnes per annum of granulated slag, besides normal by products from the coke oven and coke chemical plant.
MAJOR PLANT FACILITES
VSP has the following major production facilities:
• 3 coke oven batteries of 67ovens each having 41.6 CUM volume.
• 2 sinter machines of 312 SQM area.
• 2 blast furnaces of 3200 CUM useful volume.
• Steel melt shops with 3 L.D. converters of 150t capacity each and 6no.s of 4 strand continuous bloom casters.
• Light and medium merchant mills of 710000 tonnes per year capacity.
• Wire rod mills of 850000 tonnes per year capacity.
• Medium merchant and structural mills of 850000 tonnes per capacity.
Besides these a captive power plant with a capacity of 247.5 MW, oxygen plant, acetylene plant, compressed air plant etc. also form part of the plant facilities. Extensive facilities have been provided for repair and maintenance as well as maintenance of spare parts.
WATER SUPPLY
Water requirement of the steel plant is being met from the yeleru water supply. There is a storage reservoir at yeleswaram and a 15kms long lined canal to the plant site apart from Kanithi balancing reservoir.
POWER SUPPLY
The plant has in-plant power generation from a power plant having 3no’s of 60MW and one 64.7MW sets installed. Additional requirement of operational power, around 150MVA is being met from the APTRANSCO grid.
CAPTIVE MINES
The mines at jaggayyapeta (bf grade lime stone) and khammam (sms grade dolomite) have been developed by VSP as captive mines. Other raw materials are being purchased or imported.
