A universal motor speed control system is introduced with a PWM AC switch. The principles of operation of the control system are presented, which is done with a microcontroller. The mathematical model of the universal motor and the AC PWM chopper are derived and the behavior of the system is studied by simulation. The mains power factor, motor speed and current are analyzed for different load conditions. Harmonic analysis of the current and the motor voltage are given and compared with the phase control technique. Experiments are carried out to verify the effectiveness of the system. According to the experimental results, both simple hardware design and good response speed can be achieved.
Universal motor
A universal motor is an electric motor coiled in series that can operate in both AC and DC. These are a lot of comparatives to those of the DC series motors but the series engine develops less torque when it works from an AC source than when working from a DC source equivalent. The direction of rotation can be changed by exchanging the connections to the field with respect to the armature as in the motor of the DC series.
The operation of a universal motor is similar to a dc series engine. On the other hand, the universal motor is designed for AC operation. It is competent to work with AC or DC current. In this way their development is a little distinctive. Field winding and armature winding are connected in series; Both windings energize when voltage is applied to the motor. Field and armature windings produce a magnetic field that causes the armature to rotate. Modest universal motors usually have no pay and spare winding; They have two protruding poles with excitation winding. The response between magnetic fields is caused by AC or DC.
