A solar tree is a structure that incorporates solar energy technology into a single pillar, such as a tree trunk. It can be a solar artwork or a functional energy generator. Solar trees are meant to bring visibility to solar technology and improve the landscape and architecture they complement, usually in a commercial or public context. One goal of many solar tree installations is to promote awareness, understanding and adoption of renewable energy. They are not typically used as a primary energy source for a property-that role is realized by solar roof systems. Solar trees are complementary to rooftop solar systems, or other green building measures, which symbolize these larger investments and their environmental benefits.

Sculptural creations unique to a single site began to appear in 1998 (for example, the 7 kW tree in Gleisdorf, Austria) or earlier. A number of variants of solar trees have been conceived, not all of them made in facilities. Locations include highways, public areas in cities, schools and universities, office buildings, science museums, and more. Recently, designers and manufacturers have introduced solar trees as products, designed to offer the benefits of solar trees in a repeatable way to more places. Examples include the Ross Lovegrove solar tree which incorporated seat, lighting, and circular groups of photovoltaic cells, Solar Envision's specifically registered Solar Solar Parking Deck, and the line of Solar Spotlight and Architectural Structures CSIR's latest solar energy tree from India.
