The modern energy system consists of complex networks, where many power plants and hubs are interconnected through long transmission and distribution networks. Utility distribution networks, critical business operations and sensitive industrial loads suffer from various types of disruptions and interruptions that can lead to significant financial losses, loss of production, inactive labour forces, etc.
A new control scheme based on fuzzy logic for the Unified Power Quality Conditioner (UPQC) to minimize voltage sinking and total harmonic distortion in the distribution system to improve power quality. UPQC is a recent power electronics module that guarantees a better energy quality mitigation, as it has serial active power filters and bypass assets (APF). The fuzzy logic controller has recently attracted a great deal of attention and conceptually possesses the quality of simplicity by addressing complex systems with vagueness and ambiguity. In this investigation, the fuzzy logic controller is used to generate reference signal that controls the UPQC. To enable this, a systematic approach to creating the fuzzy membership functions is carried out using an ant colony optimization technique for optimal control of fuzzy logic. An exhaustive simulation study using MATLAB / Simulink is conducted to investigate and demonstrate the performance of the proposed fuzzy logic controller and the simulation results are compared to the PI controller in terms of its performance in improving the quality of Energy by minimizing voltage sag and total harmonic distortion.
