The electrochemical ultracapacitor is an emerging technology that promises to play an important role in meeting the demands of electronic devices and systems now and in the future. This new available technology of ultra-capacitors is making it easier for engineers to balance their energy and power usage. Power storage devices such as ultracapacitors are normally used together with the batteries to compensate for the limited capacity of the battery. Of course, proper control of energy storage systems presents both a challenge and an opportunity for the energy and energy management system.
This article traces the history of technology development and explores the principles and theory of ultracapacitor performance. The use of ultra-capacitors in various applications is discussed and their advantages over alternative technologies are considered. Systems that incorporate ultracapacitors as vital components are also explored. This document aims to provide a brief overview of ultracapacitor technology as it stands today.
